Our 12v auxiliary power circuit is protected by a 20 amp fuse (fuse size should be based on the wire gauge and length of the circuit). This is extremely overkill for the application but will make for a very reliable system. We've used a 12 volt, 120 amp marine grade relay. Split charge circuit wired to 12v+ alternator output terminal An example circuit would then be represented in the following figure: This is recommended if you are running a new circuit to the trailer plug or are replacing an existing circuit. Alternatively, the auxiliary charge circuit may be wired to the 12v+ output terminal of the alternator (this is common). Keep in mind that on a dual battery system (all diesel vehicles) the 12v+ recharge circuit only needs to be connected to ONE positive battery terminal since the batteries are connected in parallel. Split charge circuit wired directly to the vehicle battery A typical circuit looks something like this: All vehicles have empty circuits in their fuse box and thus is not particularly difficult to find a power source with a multimeter or probe light. The switched terminals of the relay are spliced into the 12v auxiliary power circuit of the tow vehicle and the coil of the relay is wired to a 12v source on the tow vehicle that is hot only when the key is in the "RUN" position. It has a toggle switch that use to work but now does nothing. All that is required to build this circuit is a SPST (single pole, single throw) 12 volt relay, some automotive wire (14 AWG will suffice), and an assortment of terminals. It looks like it was never hooked up? The switch inside has a red LED and it is still lit. The red wire was loose when I pulled the cover panel off that exposed the above.
Camper battery isolator relay wiring pdf#
Thanks! I printed out the PDF file and will head out to the RV and see what I can find. The top is labeled "Use" and the bottom is labeled "Store". The panel with the 2 way momentary switch is labeled "Battery Disconnect". Someone may have bumped the disconnect switch and then the batteries did not get their usual trickle charge. My guess is my batteries need replacing and did not survive the abnormal freezing weather we had this winter. Once I got a charge into the battery, the relay did trip and the system started charging from the inverter.

I would guess you have blown a fuse somewhere in the switch circuit. Is the switch a momemtary with the switch sitting in the center position? Is there any label on the switch? What is make and model of rig?

You could cycle it off and then on to verify it is working. If you are working on battery power while camping it is working. The latching relay is the battery disconnect. The brown latching relay can be taken apart and cleaned. I carry a spare but of course it hasn't failed. I siliconed around the crimped housing joint. The silver relay in my rig gets corroded on the inside from moisture as it is located under the hood. I would look for a blown fuse if it is not operating. The switch is for the battery disconnect. Yes, you need it to charge both battery systems. That could be the control wire from the intellitec isolator relay delay. I think I see a small red wire hanging loose. Relay on left the silver one is the charge and auxilary start relay. Picasa Album of our MH refurb in progress
Camper battery isolator relay wiring how to#
I assume the isolator relay is on the right (it has the wires from the switch attached.), but not sure what the one on the left is.Īny ideas on how to track down why the charging circuit stopped working?Įdited 04/05/11 04:55pm by an administrator/moderator * I found the above relays but not sure what they all do. There are no fuses blown that I have found.

I am plugged into shore power, and both the AC and 12 lights are working. Last time this happened, someone had triggered the battery isolator but today when I hit the switch, there was no relay clunk. It now seems the house battery is also dead. I had installed a trik-L-Charge last summer and up until now had no problems. Today i went to start the motorhome for it's long overdue maint run.
